I am Admin of these boards so this is not Spam. I am a private pilot and boater and absolutely love this amazing little device. Every boater, outdoor enthusiast and pilot should own one of these in my opinion. It will send for help outside of cell phone range if you are in trouble or you can just let your significant other know that you are ok or done fishing and starting to come back in from 50 miles out, etc.

Now is your chance to get the really cool SPOT Satellite Messenger for free until March 29. They have only given the hardware away for free once before for a few days that I am aware of. Almost all retailers sell these units for around $150. iboats.com sells them for $136. You still pay a yearly monitoring fee but at least you don't have to pay for the hardware like the rest of us that already have one.

Why is iboats telling you where to get it for free when we sell it? Because these little devices are very cool and save lives. It is worth spreading the word. I was told at the Miami boat show by a SPOT employee that they don't expect to ever give them away free again so this promo is a good surprise.

Go to their site for more info:

Hope some of you pick one up.

that is a LOT for a yearly subscription.
It is not a GPS right?

Just an emergency locator basically.

It uses gps satellites to send 3 types of messages to authorities and multiple friends or family. You get to choose. You can send them to email address or text message to cell phone. You set up who you want to send to and what message is said beforehand through their web site using your own account.

Here are the three kinds of messages that include your lat and long position:

1. 911 - Send the cavalry someone is in big peril. Expect helicopters and search and rescue.
2. "I'm OK" - you are checking in and letting them know your exact location.
3. "Need help" - Don't send the police but I am in need of help - sent to your friends not the authorities.

If you are a pilot flying over remote areas or you go fishing outside of cell coverage the yearly fees are actually quite modest for the safety you are getting. If you never leave cell range then yes, you might not need one of these.

I would had take it if they allow you to do monthly payments... I would only need it like twice a year and I would pay the year... I just dont want to tie my money now... If I were fishing in the Appalachian as before I would take it in a heart beat!!!

It makes sense for some and not as much for others. Depends on what you do and where you go to do it.

It was not my intention to put the system or offer down. I was just saying while it was not worth it for me now.... Sorry if it came out the wrong way...

No offense taken. You make a good point. If I wasn't going anywhere out of cell phone range either hunting, fishing or flying I would probably pass too. The important thing is that we all go outside and have some fun and stay safe and not just stay on these boards once the weather gets good! I've got Spring fever pretty bad! :)
