I recently bought a '76-'77 10hp Chrysler (long shaft Sailor model: 100HA) -- want to use it as an auxiliary/trolling motor on my old cruiser. I've got spark in each plug, had the starter rebuilt, replaced the fuel pump diaphram and gaskets, cleaned the carb but haven't rebuilt it. It starts but doesn't run well yet (actually, barely runs so far). It's pumping water OK, but I should probably replace the impeller after I get the thing running.

I think I have to go back into the fuel pump, because one of the reeds doesn't lie flat and I forgot to fix it. (I'm getting fuel to the carb when the engine is turned over, but the flow doesn't seem very strong -- not anywhere close to what it is when the bulb is squeezed, but maybe that is not surprising.) I can't get the engine to run at more than a fast idle in gear at WOT, though, and have to keep the choke almost closed to do that. Squeezing the bulb doesn't make any difference, so the fuel pump might not be quite perfect, but it probably isn't the main problem, right?

I'm thinking the carburetor main nozzle might be partially plugged (Tilotson carb), but can't figure out how to remove it. There is a bypass tube running vertically through the middle of it (consistent with the parts manual), but I'm a little afraid to remove it. Do I punch it out? As it is, it's blocking access to the nozzle. The bypass tube opening goes up through the top of the carburetor -- supposed to be a plug up there, but I mistakenly dug it out before I got the manual (no gas flows out the top, though -- maybe that indicates a blockage??).

The other openings look clean. The main fuel jet was pretty gummed up, but it's clean now and the problem is still there.

So does this sound like a carb problem, and if so does it sound like it could be a plugged main nozzle? And if it's the main nozzle, how do I get the bypass tube out to unscrew the nozzle -- and what the heck is the bypass tube for anyway?

Thanks -- and sorry for the long posting.
