I have a 1963 10 hp evenrude. when i try to start it the start line is right on the rubber roller and the tiller handle is on start. but when I pull the rope everything moves clockwise and the handle goes to stop. If I use a vise grip to hold the line on the rubber roller the motor starts right up. is there a part that might be missing or broken that is supposed to hold everything in the right spot? Thanks

Is Number 35 in the diagram broken on your motor?

Did you replace the coils recently? if the coil heels are out too far it will do the same thing. Ho wis the tension on the twist grip? If its too loose it may move around too.

I agree, the most likely thing is the coils are dragging on the magnets. A worn or incorrectly assembled armature plate will cause them to drag too.

Just so you know, the correct starting position is with the motor in neutral, turn the twist grip as far as it will go toward Fast. The shifter interlock will limit the throttle to the correct position. The "Start" word on the twist grip is seldom, if ever, correct. The mark on the cam will actually be a bit beyond the roller in the real start position.

Did you line the coil legs up with the magneto bosses or are they too far out now? If so the air gap may be too much hense why no more spark, they have to be spot on.

I wish I'd read that 3 hours ago. I've taken my entire throttle assembly apart about 3 times trying to get the 'STOP' line on the twist grip to align with 'true stop'. My biggest concern was if the twist grip didn't align at 'Stop', I might not get full throttle (my carb is off right now, waiting for the rebuild kit.)
Oh well. It was good exercise anyway.

Those hardly ever line up. The main thing that band does with the words written on is to cover the two screws behind it and make it look good!
