Re: 10 HP Sportwin Shift troubles
Yes, that's a 10hp, built in 1963. Fuel/Oil mix was originally 24:1. Spark plugs should be Champion J4J (now J4C) gapped at .030"
The Old OMC Site.

The shift linkage is accessed by removing the little access port on the side of the leg of the engine. If both rods are moving up and down there when you operate the lever, the problem is in the lower unit (gearcase). If not, the problem is either the shift lever itself, or the bellcrank directly underneath the powerhead. You must remove the powerhead to access the bellcrank.
The most common reason for having shifting problems is from removing the phillips screw on the lower unit rather than the slot one to drain the gearcase oil. This causes the shift fork to fall out of it's cradle inside the gearcase. If this is the problem, Realigning it usually requires disassembling the gearcase. Unless you have a lot of paitence and luck!

You can order aftermarket manuals from Iboats, or somtimes you can borrow one from your local library. OEM manual reprints, which many consider superior to the aftermarket manuals, are available here:
