Hello all. This is my 1st year boating and I want to do everything right to prevent problems. I have a 2005 115 horse Yam 4 stroke. I just hit 112 hours.(Busy fishing season so far) What is done at 100 hr service? Oil, gear lube, fuel/water sep., plugs, and roughly what does it cost?

Re: 100 hour service

Hi PD. Welcome to iboats.

The maintenance schedule for four stroke Yamahas is listed in the owner's manual. After asking a similar question last year, I also serviced the "zincs" which is not listed in the manual. You should seek a written quote from your dealer as our rates are different (probably more!) here in Australia. :)

Re: 100 hour service

hahaahaah
you guys and your hundred hour services kill me.
I do them all the time. its really quite funny. most times thats all the motor ever gets. never gets the 200,400,500 or 1000 hour maint much less the daily, weekly monthly semi annuall or yearly
I have boats that are 10 years old and have had a couple 100 hour services, mostly when they broke. dont bring me a motor for maint thats broke. if its broke its broke. follow the maint schedules. dont allow the dealer to skimp. if at 100 hours the GED DANG zinc is bad its bad. does not matter if its got 3 weeks,100 hours 10 years or 1000 hours. if the dang zinc is bad its bad.
thats why I do what I do. I tell my customers it costs what it costs and I cant tell them to the penny+tax what it will be, if they dont like it there are 10 more dealers in the next 150 miles. go. ya have to remember its a general schedule. its not written in stone. it also depoends on how your running it. you have a very high quality product. if you get to hung up on just hours and forget the calender part your pooched. if you do a lot in shallow sandy waters check the water pump every 6months or 100 hours. dont wait till it quits.
there is also some maint that is not in the book on the VST filter. most people allow the dealers to wait until something breaks before they look at the VST.for some reason the 2 and 4 stokes are a bit different in the VST maint schedule. maybe its cause its so blasted expensive yamaha is embarresed. dont know. the 2 stroke EFI is a 200 hour or 1 year. the 4 stroke never mentions it.the filter is actually smaller on the 4 stroke. so best I can say is buy a 2005 marine tech guide and become familiar with your motor. then instead of telling the dealer ya want a 100 hour service you can track what is actually done and what is needed

Re: 100 hour service

sorry if it was rough. its just what I see on a daily basis. had a 250 1997 model inthe other day. bad water pump. never had been changed. had records of 14 100 hour services. remote oil tank had never been done either.
so read up on the procedure but always remember its hourly OR calender. and there are a lot more than just 100 hour services. one of the marinas I contract for wont check valve adjustments, the theory is if its not making noise and still running its ok. not a good theory but one they run with.

Re: 100 hour service

No problem. Like I said I am new to the game. Any info to me is valuable. My cousin works for a Yamaha service marina and he takes good care of me. I just wanted to know what to look out for after 100 hours on the water. What seems to go first and what should I keep an eye out for. How many times a year is a service recommended? Thanks in advance. Mike
Oh yea, how can I read up on it? Do you recommend a Yamaha manual? I see them at Boaters World and West Marine

Re: 100 hour service

I think when they close on this property I will go try to vist DonS.
seems he can get things online. I cant. to stupid I rekon. but you have to make the basic service schedule fit your needs. if your fising the oregon inlet area a pump kit every 100 hours is the norm. lots of sand in the water plus the occasanol thin spot ya find. the guy in a deep fresh water lake may make 3 years without a pump. ya gotta use common sense with the manual. DO NOT let you wallet dictate maint. also BE VERY careful trusting the dealer as well
