Hi Guys,

I have a 1988 (I think) 100HP Mariner outboard. I put it in the lake this weekend and noticed after running the engine a sharp burning plastic smell coming from the engine compartment. I investigated but could find nothing. This is the first time since owning the motor (5+ years) I have ever smelled anything like that. Any suggestions/ideas?

Also, can anyone offer me suggestions on the best size prop and pitch to run on this motor -- it powers a 17' Edson fiberglass bowrider.

Thanks for the help! Great site!

Red-

I know less than most on this board and this makes my second post, so take it for what it's worth...

Could you have a clogged water intake and the smell your impeller burning itself up?

Yankee, how would I tell if I had a clogged water intake?

The '****' stream of coolant water seems to be fine and full strength when the engine is running...

Re: 100 HP Mariner Burning Smell

Doesn't sound as if it's a water/impeller problem to me then. Maybe if you expounded on the matter one of the big fish here could offer some better direction - was this the first trip out? Any winterizng oil/fog gunk left in the cowl? How long did you run before noticing it? Did you run in mud or trash just before? Does it have a over heat buzzer or did it seem hot? Fresh gas/proper oil? Spin the hub? etc etc

Did you continue running w/o any probs? I'm not saying I'd know what to do with some of these answers, but more detail might give someone else a better shot at it.

Still can't help but think changing the impeller may be a good idea if it's more than a few years old.
Take care

Re: 100 HP Mariner Burning Smell

Hi,

It was the second trip out of the season, first day though. I did fog it before I put it away for the winter....

It only ran for about a minute before I noticed the burning smell...

I hit a rock and chewed up the prop the first time out -- trimmed two blades of the three blade prop up about .5 to an inch in. This happened about 8 hours before I noticed the burning smell...

Winterized gas, proper oil yes. The burning smell continued while I was running the engine and I could smell it in the air for a good 10 minutes after I shut the engine off....

Thanks guys
