If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of
precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining
the same, it would look something like the following:

There would be:
57 Asians
21 Europeans
14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south
8 Africans

52 would be female
48 would be male

70 would be non-white
30 would be white

70 would be non-Christian
30 would be Christian

89 would be heterosexual
11 would be homosexual

6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth and
all 6 would be from the United States.

80 would live in substandard housing

70 would be unable to read

50 would suffer from malnutrition

1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth

1 (yes, only 1) would have a college education

1 would own a computer

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness...you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week.
If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation ...you are ahead of 500 million people in the world.

If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death...you are more blessed than three billion people in the world.

If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep...you are richer than 75% of this world.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace ... you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy.

If your parents are still alive and still married ... you are very rare, even in the United States and Canada.

You might also note that more than half of Homo Sapiens who have lived. . . ever. . . are still alive.

Now that's a stat to ponder on JB.
That would suggest that around 14 billion or less Homo sapiens have lived and died.

After 14 billion, shouldn't we have evolved into birds or something?
I guess that shoots the evolution theory all to heil.

Re: 100 people......

I would argue with at least one of your observations. I have never accepted the fact that Qu**rs were supposed to make up 10% of the population, and here you give them 11%. If This were true, that means that of our 31,900 members (as of 8/29/03), 3,509 of us are Qu**rs, or to make it simpler, 1.1 of us out of 19 are fags and/or Dikes. I do not accept this, who are they you, he, her, they, not me for sure. :D :D :D :D

I'm not the author... just passing it on. These are one of those things that get passed around on the net.

Here'sanother stat from the local museum anthropologist. If every human presently on earth were evenly distributed there would be 100 people to every square mile.Maybe that's why solving world hunger is futile.Even a rancher can tell you that those numbers are overstocked for the lands resources.

Re: 100 people......

I did some math and my answer may be incorrect ( I used pen and paper, not a calculator) but I come up with the following:

196,950,000 SQ. miles of land

6,315,292,956 People

Equals approximately 32 per SQ. Mile.

Not as alarming as 100 but concerning since only a small percentage of earth is inhabitable.

WP,

You're correct.

I am going to go out on a limb here and guess you are either an engineer, accountant or some one in the sciences. Am I right?

Whalerproud,That may be where the guy at the museum got his 100 people to 1 square mile number.By using just the inhabitable land.

Re: 100 people......

Ralph:
I am not an engineer, just a construction monkey (project manager). I looked into the numbers because I have had this kind of discussion before with environmental alarmists.

If you look at the population distribution throughout the world, most of the population resides close to coastal areas or other large bodies of water (the Great Lakes are a good example). And while the theory that 100 people per square mile would present a problem with world hunger, the truth is most hunger is the direct result of poor government policy in the affected areas. In fact, there is a surplus of food in the world. Modern farming techniques do an incredible job of maintaining the highest production per acre imaginable. As for ranching, the land cannot support a large number of "free-ranging" bodies, but a stockyard can.

World hunger is directly related to economics and education. Consider how many tons of food is exported from the United States to countries whose populations are starving. Do a little research and you will find that the affected areas are mostly under the control of totalitarian governments who take the food for their troops.

Just an opinion.
