I have a 1988 110 HP Evinrude that I need to replace the lower unit. The top of the shift rod looks like it has a pin in it with no apparent way to remove it. I see no keepers on it, just a smooth pin holding the shift rod on. How do I get it out and how do I get to it? Thanks, I'm kinda desparate!

Re: Jerkalip

You don't have to remove the bottom carb. It's not easy to get to but can be done with an extension and a 1/4" swivel. It should be slotted or have a hex head, can't remember exactly. The shift rod is a lot easier to access if the engine is in reverse.

Re: 110 Evinrude shift rod connection

Hi,
I haven't worked on one of that vintage yet, but I have a factory manual for my 89 100hp Evinrude. In my manual it says to shift it into reverse, then romove the retaining pin from the shift lever( the hair pin right behind the lever that the cable hitches to). Then push the lever and shaft in toward the powerhead. That is supposed to realease it. Sounds pretty easy. Alot better than the older ones I've worked on. If you need I can scan the page from my manual and send it to you.
Regards,
Brian

I know on my 81 model its a 7/16th bolt that you get to using the 1/4 drive swivel extension and a socket going in from the port side under the carbs.
Your year may be different.I'm sure one of the John-Rude pros will chime in when they see this.I do remember shifting mine into reverse and it was easy to get to...

I don't know the protocol of this forum, but yes, I inadvertantly submitted two request and did not know what the "title" was in regard to. Please forgive my ignorance. Brian, thanks as I believer this is the closest answer to my problem. The pin looks smooth on each side and that perplexes me. I did order a manual online last night. I thank all of you for your input. Jerkalip
