I received a disturbing phone call Monday August 22 at 6:30 am from a local fisherman that my boat was underwater. There were heavy rains and a bad swell at the marina and unfortunately my bilge pump failed. My engine was underwater for 12 and when i finally brought my boat and engine above the water i found that it was full of water. I pulled it out of the water amd tried to drain it the best i could. I found that some of my wiring was disintegrated. I'm wondering how i should now treat my engine. Any suggestion?

Now that you've taken it out of the water you need to start it up right away or risk it rusting out - expecially true for salt water. If it hasn't been out for long you can put it in a tub of fresh water until you have the time to get it going.

I second that motion. Get it running ASAP Hopefully, it wasn't submerged for too long to save it, but it's best to give it a try. If it still spins over normally, then you should still have a chance of saving it.

I agree, i had someone bring me a 15hp that was underwater for a week, i removed the flywheel and cleaned all the mud off of it blew it dry with air and pumped fuel through the carb. it fired right up and is still running. as long as it's under water it won't really rust but as soon as it is above water you need to act fast.. good luck.

Don't crank it until you've pulled the plugs. Once you do that, turn it over slowly with the pull starter. If it's a 2 stroke, squirt some fuel mix directly into the cylinders through the plug holes. Do that a couple of times. Drain the carb bowl, put some fresh gas in (I'm assuming since your whole boat was underwater that your fuel may be contaminated with water) and run it for a while. Wash the whole motor down with some fresh water if you can. This was the process I used with my 9.9 got submerged a few months ago.
