Hello,

I have a 96' 112SPL outboard that I am in need of rewiring (completely). Is this a do-it-yourself project? Can replacement wiring harnesses be purchased and swapped out? If so where can the wiring harnesses be purchased?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Matt

Re: 112SPL engine Re-wire????

The motor cable assembly is still available from BRP at about $175. Don't know if Rapair has one for the aftermarket yet or not.

Why do you need to rewire? Fire, overheated engine.....?

Could you post your model number? There's about for different models of this engine.

EDIT: Rapair has them although they don't quote a price on the harness. Checked the different models and they all use the same harness....PN 586027.

OBJ,

The ID # on the engine is G04142086 will this help in determining exact model #? The reason for replacing the wiring is that the engine may have sustained some submersion damage and is now beginning to show signs of electrical failure.

That's the serial number Iceking. Look on the port transom bracket for the model number.

Electrical failure doesn't mean the harness is going bad. Can you describe what you are experiencing with the engine?

Re: 112SPL engine Re-wire????

OBJ,

I will provide the Model # later this evening once I return home.

The reason for the re-wire is a recommendation from my mechanic. He indicated that the engine may have been submerged and the wiring may soon fail. The only indication of electrical problems are with the trim/tilt.

Last fall, the trim started to act up, where it would work for a few minutes, then stop working. When I activated the engine cowling switch, I could hear clicking in the relay box, but the engine would not trim up or down. Some tapping on the relays and internal wiring resolved the problem for a few intermittent attempts, however the trim did not work as of last evening. The pump/motor seems to work fine when I provide power directly. I bought replacement relays today and will try again tonight. If the new relays do not resolve the issue, then I figure it must be a wiring fault. Would you agree? What do you suggest for correcting this issue?

Other than that, the engine was running great the end of last season, however when I pulled it from the water, the engine alarm sounded (?). I'm not sure why, as I do not have a systems check gauge on the boat. Is there a way to determine why the engine alarm sounded, if I do not have a systems check gauge? I was thinking if the alarm goes off, I could determine which component of the system check gauge was receiving power by connecting a volt meter directly to the deutch connector pins. Does this make sense?

How long was the engine submerged? I can't really believe if the engine was underwater for just a few hours, that the engine harness would go bad.

Check the grounds as reeldutch suggested. Also check all the connections from the TNT box....including the plugs for the relays. You may have a corroded connection.
