Re: 115 Chrysler

AHA! I read your private message and you were specific about changing the timing belt.
FIRST: Set the timing belt tension correctly. Too tight and you will have shifting problems. Too loose and timing will wander a bit.
To correctly set the timing belt tension, you loosen the distributor mounting bolts just enough so you can pivot the mount. Now, with a .010 feeler gauge, press in the middle of the belt. The belt should bend about 1/8 to 3/16 inch before the feeler gauge bends. Tighten the mounting bolts.
To reset timing: Set the flywheel so the 0 (zero) mark is set to the long line on the block pointer. This is top dead center. With the distributor loose enough to move the belt, set the distributor pulley so that the curved line matches the curve of the flywheel and the straight line is pointing directly at the flywheel. Now set tension on the belt.
If you did not change the setting of the timing link (threaded screw and two plastic blocks) then the timing should still be where it was set.
If you wish to re-time the engine you don't even need a timing light.
1. Remove and ground all four plugs--leave wires attached. Mark wires so you know which goes where.
2. Set the control handle to wide open throttle.
3. With the ignition switch on, slowly turn the flywheel by hand until the top plug sparks.
4. The 36 degree mark on the flywheel should be four short lines to the left of the long line on the block pointer.
If your block pointer only has one long line, the 36 degree mark should be about one flywheel tooth to the left. If your flywheel has a decal, the 32 degree mark should align with the long line on the block pointer.
