I have a 115 evinrude crossflow 1995 I rebuilt about a year ago. I just got it out of storage getting ready for the season. I noticed there is salt all around the head's like the gaskets are seeping. compression is 120 on all 4 cylinders I had them all bored 00.20 over, seeing as the gasket are only about a year old is this normal? I am thinking about replacing them and putting a thin coat of gasket sealent even though it says not to. This motor is run in saltwater and always flushed and cleaned after every use. Motor starts and runs fine idles great just dont want this to turn into something bigger.....

Re: 115 crossflow head gaskets

Did you re-torque the cylinder heads after breaking in the rebuild? If not, you should.

Some salt is going to get inside the engine cover and corrosion is probably what you see because the metal at the mating surface is unprotected.

We use paint, T-9 and WD-40 to try to keep the engines protected, but it is hard to do in areas where parts are expanding and contracting at different rates.

Also, you have to be very meticulous in maintenance of your anodes. As soon as they turn white, they are not working. It's also possible for them to look fine but have lost electrical contact.

Ezeke is right on. You should always retorque the heads after the rebuilt powerhead goes through it's first heat/cooling cycle.
