Recently replaced both coils, rectifier and plugs on 115 Evinrude (1998) to correct a problem that included tac not working and not being able to get up on plane. All problems were corrected and took boat out and ran for about 3 hours, different speeds ect. Ran great no problems, then on the way back in running at about 4000 rpm I felt a little miss and a few seconds later, engine started breaking down. Trottled back to 3500 rpm and it ran fine. Came back to idle, ran fine, went back on plane, slight miss but no problem getting on plane, any speed past 3500 rpm and it starts breaking down. Cranks and idles ok. New plugs (ngk) and new water seperator. Please help, summer is here and I have 5 grandsons waiting for a ride, Thanks in advance for any help.

Try squeezing the bulb on the fuel hose when it starts to miss. If it keeps running, you may need a fuel pump.

The best way to trouble shoot this problem is a running test with a peak-reading volt meter, otherwise you get into just changing parts'. Sound's like you may have been into that, changing 2 coils.

First thing that I would do is put in a set of Champion plugs, that is what that motor was designed to use.

Secondly, check the Orange to Orange/Black power coil wires with an oscilloscope (If available) or replace the pack. A breakdown inside the pack could cause RFI noise to activate the rev limiter for no apparent reason. This could be your problem.

I would also want to verify the engine is not actually over-heating by using an infrared thermometer or digital pyrometer. Possible you are going into SLOW, although it will usually now allow you past 2500 RPM. Check the routing of the tan temperature wires, they have to be located as far away as possible from the spark plug wires.

Try squeezing the bulb on the fuel hose when it starts to miss. If it keeps running, you may need a fuel pump.

Or an air leak in a fuel hose connection. Does your engine have an audible warning device for low fuel? I have corrected many issues like yours by simply changing the fuel hose connections, both on the line and on the tank.
I believe there is a warning buzzer on your motor for overheat, low gas, and low oil(if equipped with vro).

Replaced power pack and that fixed the problem, thanks for the help. Also noted on the new power pack it had a sticker that said to use only Champion QL78YC plugs which is what came in it from fractory, relaced those also. Thanks again
