115 Evinrude motor problem.

I know I posted this before, buy I wasn't as detail with the problems. I am having problems getting it started and when it starts keeping it started. The first thing I do is pump the bulb, push the key in and then crank. While doing this, there is a knob ( i think it is a idle knob, bc when it is started it revs real high and real low) by buddy turns it while I crank it. After he gets it to the right spot it will start. When started we go to procceed forward it just dies. After a while it will start and go fine, but when we turn it off we have to do it all over again. I did change my spark plugs and it didnt work.

start at the beginning, year, model # the 115 has been around for 40 years.

idle knob, where is this knob? have you check spark and compression on all 4 cylinders?
