HI
I have a small but irritating problem with the starter, when I start the engine it sort of "kicks back" and disengages the starter bendix (just like and old merc in line 6) the other motor is fine and the starter stays engaged till it starts, which is quite fast really but the other one requires quite a few kicks till it stays engaged long enough to start, could it be a timing setting? or just a slightly dodgey starter, I may swap the starters from one motor to the other if some one thinks it is the starter

any thoughts on this one? if no one responds I will swap starters anyway, but I am unsure if it is a timing issue as fichts are quite complicated to fiddle with! the starter never was like this, it only happened a few weeks ago, the battery is good as I have swapped it with the other one.

I don't think your starter is the trouble, noel.

I think one cylinder is firing and the next isn't.

Try a compression test and let us know what you get.

Good luck. :)

Around 2001 OMC redesigned the 60 degree motor's starter Bendix for more durability and to get rid of the "kick outs".

The new kit even includes a beefed up flywheel cover to keep it from flexing when the starter is engaged.

might look into that as well, as mine are 2000 models and could be the problem, but I will still do compression check, last time they were checked (about 6 months ago) it was quite good on all cylinders but who knows as they do a lot of hours. will do it on the weekend after I come home from fishing with a boat load fo fish (I hope)
