I am looking at a 2003 Regulator with twin 115 HP 4 stroke Yamahas. I was looking for some feedback about these motors from anyone who has one or has worked on one. I can recall hearing of some problems with the earlier 4 stroke motors and was hoping that these motors are as good as the current Yamaha motors. There are only 93 hrs on them and have not yet heard them run but will be testing them shortly.
Any input would be appreciated.

Re: 115 HP 4 Stroke Yamaha

Hi,
I have one Yamaha F115 4-stroke 2003, so I have used mine for 3 seasons now (I live in Sweden, rather short seasons here from May/June to end of Sept usually).
So far no problem. I use it in freshwater only.

Some have posted problems with "making oil" on F115.
Yamaha had issued a service bulletin on the subject. There is an "upgrade kit" for those that need it:
- hotter thermostats,
- new ECM,
- different spark plugs,
- a new dip stick

My F115 does not need that kit.

I'm happy with my F115, no problem so far except I need to grease the top on the Power Trim pistons a few times in the season.

Other then above making oil I have not heard of any problems with the F115 (later models), not here or in any other boat/outboard forums I read.
The F115 was released in 1999 so it has been on the market for many years now.
In 2002 they made some cosmetic changes to the cowl/decals and in 2004 it was CARB 3-stars approved (It was CARB 2-stars before). For 2006 models I belive it is Yamaha Command Link compatible and possibility to use new guages etc.
But in general the F115 has been basically unchanged since it was first released on the market in 1999.

Probably time to change impeller now on a 2003 model (I will do that this year on my F115 2003).

Good luck.

Bo
Thanks for the input and the other threads they have been very helpful.I did check the oil on both mototrs and they seemed to be high, thin and black, it may be making oil. The problem with buying used motors is that you do not know if they were broken in properly.

Re: 115 HP 4 Stroke Yamaha

I have an 02 that was making oil. If I were you I would get an oil analyzation kit from your local auto parts store and send in a sample to have it checked. They can tell you how much gas is in the oil and any metals which may be present indicating bearing wear. Yamaha did all the things Bo mentioned to my engine and I haven't noticed a problem with it yet, but with a new baby in the family I've only put about 10 hours on it since the fix last year. By the way if it's so thin that it's running off the stick it's probably definitely making oil, that's how I noticed mine. Hope this helps.
Scott

Jerkin
You are right about it being so thin that it runs right off the stick.I will have it analyzed.
Thanks.
