I have a 1977 deck boat with what I would assume is a 1977 115 Hp Mercury. I took it out the other day and initially it had plenty of power but after running for ten minutes it lost power and would only go 10 mph. It ran without sputtering or any apparent power but just no power. The throttle cables look like they could be replaced but I took the cover off and tried to increase speed manually to no avail. I am thinking it could be a fuel filter but did not see one in-line. If anyone has any suggestions it would be appreciated. If anyone has a manual for this motor I am in the market for one.

Jim
golfgod7@juno.com

Hello:

Are you sure about the hp rating? Mercury never made a 120hp motor.

Craig

GolfGod, It sounds like you have a fuel pump failure, clogged fuel filters or fouled spark Plugs. Also check the spark plug wores arcing to ground, especially on the bottom cylinder, and under load.

PS a 1977 motor has cowling decals which are blue and blend into a red edge at the bottom of the "Swoosh".

Upon running the numbers I find the motor is a 1979. I am lost as to where the fuel filter is located (HELP) , I saw none in line nor any other obvious (to me) filters. I also noticed that the plugs that were used in it (Champion L76u) are now discontinued. Are there any marine plugs that are more reliable thanothers. thank you for your help.

Jim

golf~ mines a 1978 inline 6, and my fuel screen is situated on top of the fuel pump. the fuel pump rebuild kit came with one and cost about $10 for the kit. also check the pickup on your tank, if you can (or you can try another tank to see if this might be the problem). I went to the local OReileys and asked them for new plugs, they found the alternative for the original, which seems to be working fine.
