85 Johnson this pin showed up on the table after I removed the bearing carrier, and also the cover for the drive shaft. There were none missing in those two items.... Y'all got any other ideas?:peep:009.jpg010.jpg

when you say drive shaft cover do you mean the Impeller Housing? If so it could be a homemade impellar key. Also some of those old bearing carriers had an alignment key, but I think they were all square stock. If you have the water pump out I would guess it was the impeller key that somebody ground down at one point to aid installation of the impellar. I work on a messier bench so I dont have these problems..LOL.

Yes! I do mean the impeller housing, and impeller, and all. Then I removed the 4 bolts holding the bearing cover and removed it. The weird thing I did notice, was there was NO key to lock in the impeller to make it turn! If that is what somebody did, What else might I find...

The pin WAS used to lock the impeller on the drive shaft. The impeller has a half moon keyway, an the pin was used to lock it on the shaft. " Problem solved, and disassembly avoided.!
