my 96 mariner will not jump to high speed. It has been stored for 7 mos. with stabliizer. It started ok and idles fine but when I rev it up under load it trys to go at 2000 rpms but just slowly climbs to 4000 and thats it. Replaced seperator and fuel lines and added 15 gal of new gas. Will rev to 5400rpms at no load. New powerpack and carbs rebuilt last year, ran great. Any help?

dennis,

Is your Mariner a six or four cylinder?

If it's a four, it may be suffering from carb. problems. The four cylinder models idled on two cyl's and transitioned to four at about 1800 rpm.

You may be having trouble with the transition stage. Typically, this may relate to clogged jets in the high speed mode.

Dennis, do yourself (and your motor) a favor. Don't exceed 2000 to 2500 RPM without a load (i. e. in gear) or you run the risk of blowing up the powerhead.

Re: 115 mariner does not get to top speed

I have a 92 115 Mariner 4 cylinder. Each year in the spring I find its reluctant to go onto the other 2 cylinders until its run a while. I had a lot of trouble last year when I used too much fogging oil, it took quite a bit of running to get the other 2 cylinders started. On 2 cylinders, it just won't rev up in gear at all, then you hear the other 2 start to kick in and out a few times before really running.

By the way, what's wrong with revving it in neutral, assuming its in water and not running on the muffs?

to all who replied, thanks. I ordered a service manual and will see what it sez about the high speed function. I also recall fogging the motor a little too much. Is it possible to spray clean the carbs with cleaner? D

dennis,

DO NOT use carb. cleaner or starting fluid in a 2-stroke engine. It washes all the oil off of the parts it's trying to protect.

The best way to clear excess fogging oil is to just run it. Fogging oil CAN be a little hard on spark plugs though.

BJM,

Revving the outboard to extreme levels in nuetral is NOT good for it. They are not designed to take that. It's no different than revving your car engine to 5000 rpm's in nuetral.

Re: 115 mariner does not get to top speed

I finally received my service manual and talked with the tech who rebuilt the carbs two years ago. He said to try some lacquer thinner in a portable gas can first. It may clean up old gas deposits in the carb, so I don't have to rebuild them again.

Dennis,

You're playing with fire. Lacquer thinner is going to do the same thing to your engine that carb. cleaner will.

There are no short cuts.
