so i am rebuilding a 1998 115 and the bubble back bolts faught me the whole way i belive 8 of them broke off well anyways i got them drilled out and i had quite a problem getting the plate off in between the bubble back and the block the 440 dollar exhaust peice well i tried everything to get it lose with no luck so i had to take some screw drivers and pry it i know thats a no no and it did exactly what they do! and i put a few small grooves in the piece. My question is should i just use light sandpaper and smooth the grooves out or should i try to get some liquid metal type stuff fill in the grooves and sand that down smooth? i really dont want to throw a new 440 dollar part into it i would just be wasting money.

Re: 115 rebuild

You will have gaskets on both sides and you will be using a sealer. Do you think that they will fill the gaps? If the scratches are on the parts that keep water from mixing with the exhaust, you need to be more careful about getting a tight seal. There is not a lot of pressure but there is a lot of stress from the heat.

Re: 115 rebuild

I am rebuilding the same motor currently. Didn't have the same problem with the bolts but found a considerable amount of unevennes in alot of the "flat" surfaces of bolt on parts. I am having my machinist resurface the case and filler blocks on the exhaust side. The manifold I sanded flat on the case side. On my engine it seemed that there was alot of leaks in this location so I wanted to ensure a very tight fit when rebuilt. Tape a couple of sheets of sandpaper together and then tape the entire back of the sheets. On a flat hard surface and a bit longer than you really want to spend on it she'll be flat in no time.

use brp or permatex aviation its brown with the brush when you put your
ex plate back on. surface as skeeter said it worked for me its also a good way to check flatness .i broke quite a few bolts and had to surface heads .check them,or have the machinst that does you block check them .
use a boat machinst ,good luck it is a process,
good luck
