I have had ongoing posts about this **** problem with my 98 Evinrude 115 SPL intermittent power loss problem. Today I finally put my finger on it.

I have gone from being 100% sure it was carbs to 100% sure it was electrical (on hunches). Well, finally I am 110% sure, with evidence, it is the carbs. In fact, I can isolate it to a lack of fuel from the top port jet. I tested using carb cleaner. ran the boat at WOT (when problem is present) and sprayed carb cleaner into each barrel individually. It bogged on all except the top port, which it jumped to life and nearly tossed me and my buddy out of the boat. Same test worked over and over without fail. I cannot tell you haw relieved I am to have isolated it AT LAST. Making a date with my mechanic first thing monday and planning s fishing trip for next weekend!!!

I'll post the results end of next week!

Thanks guys, you were a huge help!

-Chad

If you were able to locate the problem, should be able to do the repair, you have done the hard part.

Re: 115 Rude power loss. Think I figured it out!!!

That's what everyone is telling me... I just got my Clymer manual in the mail a few days ago and looked at the carb section but I'm just not sure it's somthing I want to dig into. It looked pretty complex and said I would need to use a timing light to set some part of the linkage. I don't have a timing light and wouldnt know what the heck I was doing.
On the other hand, I'm looking at the progress I've made and process of elimination and feel like I should be able to do this. Given the symptoms: Isolated to one barrel, it almost HAS to be the jet. I can pretty much write off a float problem cause that feeds both barrels, as well as a fuel line delivery problem for the same reason- it feeds both barrels of the same carb. PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong about that. So I figure I'd really be looking for a particle or piece of debris somewhere in or around the jet. I just don't want to dig into something that is over my head. As I recall, a timing light cost about $80 at sears. I'd rather spend a few extra bucksa having he mechanic do it the right way. Now, if I don't need a timing light... maybe a idfferent story.

Your timing shouldn't change just because you are working on a carb. Carefully mark all linkage connections when you remove the carb and reinstall the same way.
