what would cause a 115eltj (1986) to move down after i trim it up. I trimed up the motor the other night and left it all the way up and after a day or so i hit the up button and it went up about 1/2 of a foot. I thought that maybee i didnt lift it all the way and i did it again the next day and sure enough it did the same thing. Like its slowly going down on its own. It will only go down a little bit but still would like to know what would cause this. It has those locks that you swivel down and it can rest on those but i never had to use those. Maybee it always did this i just didnt notice. Does it mean that im low on T/T fluid?? T/T still works great though just curious if this is a problem waiting to happen??

Re: 115 yammi tilt question.

hydraulic cylinders wear with use. as long as they still work just live with it.

you may eventually have to have the tilt trim unit worked on any way, you can decide at that time whether or not it is worth the expense to rebuild.

while you are thinking about your tilt unit, check to make sure the tilt motor is not rusting out, it is steel. If it is rusting badly remove and repaint or replace. If it rust through the repair is expensive.

Re: 115 yammi tilt question.

It is rusting a little at the bottom. I am thinking about pulling and inspecting it further. That is the cylinder on the left when looking at it from the rear, correct? I have seen a lot of replacement pumps that can replace that one. Its not the yamaha color buts a replacement. Here is the link. In the late fall im going to take the motor to the yamaha dealer and have it serviced. I love the way this motor runs on this boat. Its a 1986 but just one tick on the key and she is running even when cold. Here is the part i was talking about http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yama...ryZ50442QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem .

There is a lot of different ones that look like they fit the same application. It seems like yamaha didnt change the tilt/trim design for manny manny years its all the same.

Re: 115 yammi tilt question.

I recently sold my boat that had an '88 Merc 90hp on it - for the last 10 years of it's life, I would tilt it up and it would gradually go back down. I just learned to tolerate it since it was cheaper than a costly repair and really didn't affect performance, although it would be annoying when cruising the grass flats.
