1150 mercury

thought I'd ask for some advice before I start taking things apart to see how they work.

on my merc 1150 the distributor does not open the carbs all the way, the secondary pick up does not seem to be working, I can manually move the pick up and make the butterfly's open. I'm trying to get this motor going again, it starts up fine and idles, I have not given it any throttle yet or ran it for more than 30 seconds cause I'm trying to get it all sync'd , do you think the distributor is stuck or broken or does the throttle only open all the way with a load:confused:

another question, the timing pointer, does this motor have one? it's a 72 1150, there is a timing sticker that has tdc#1 piston#1 then degree incriments, I'm still studying clams canino's timing instructions, think I have it figured out except this full throttle issue,

any help, thanks J

Looking back at the engine the top left stop screw is a throttle stop try backing it out till the throttles open fully.

Here's an image to show that screw location Laddies refers to. Be sure that the carb butterflies also close fully when the throttle is returned to idle.

Re: 1150 mercury

so the carbs should open all the way with the engine off

how about that timing pointer that does not exist on my motor? I lined the three dots on the flywheel with the tdc on the sticker, I'm going to get a dial indicator to check tdc per instructions, thanks for the pics and your time, J

Jason, The timing pointer was used on newer models than yours. Look on the top cowling support and see if there is a cast in timing mark. That is where the timing mark was on my '73 Merc 850.

got another one for you, what is the economizer collar, I'm not seeing it in the pic unless they are talking about the carburetor cluster? J

Re: 1150 mercury

I think they mean the brownish spring around the dissy. It allows the carbs to open fully, after the dissy stops advancing.

Re: 1150 mercury

I keep seeing that 23 deg timing is too much, should I be running it at 19 or 20?

Re: 1150 mercury

The Merc experts here recommend 21 degrees as max timing advance

Re: 1150 mercury

I found out why the carbs wouldn't open all the way, the max timing advance screw was all the way in, the dissy wouldn't advance at all, glad I didn't try to run it like that.

thanks again, Jason
