so i came across a guy who has a brand new never used inline 6 powerhead going for $1350 and is willing to negotiate. just wanted to pick all of your brains on if this is a good deal and is it a smart buy? i have an inline six and would not mind having a brand new backup motor.

4539732 is the serial number on my bracket. Here is the description for it

"This is a brand new, never installed, original complete Mercury powerhead assembly for any 1973-1979 in-line 6 115HP outboard. Mercury part number 7401A2. Markings on the engine indicate a manufacturing date of June 1989. It is a factory all new powerhead from the Mercury manufacturing facility in Fond du Lac, complete with crank and pistons, not re-manufactured, not rebuilt. Block casting number is 852-7738

I obtained it from one of Mercury's largest dealerships, who ordered it for one of their jobs, only to have the customer back out of the powerhead replacement. I purchased it as a spare for one of my engines about 10 years ago, which I now no longer own. It has been stored indoors, in a climate controlled environment, and has been kept well lubricated, and rotates freely.

This is NOT a "Power Ported Piston" powerhead as used in the 140 and 150 HP models, 1973-1979, and is for a distributor ignition model only. It is not applicable to a 1981-1988 ADI (alternator driven ignition) 90 or 115 HP model. But it could be one of the only remaining brand new factory 115 HP in-line 6 powerheads from the 1970's in existence!"

Waaaaaay over priced..You can rebuild one cheaper with new pistons and get a power port model.

Your serial # checks out as a 76. You are correct about your engine not using the Power Ported powerhead. The 115 didn't get that until 1982 when Merc started Propshaft Rating and the 140 was dropped.
I'm not sure what Fazbullet is implying, but you could rebuild your current engine, and you could install the Power Ported Pistons, but without the Block having the correct casting and machining to utilize the Power Port, you might actually lose some power due to a slightly lower crankcase compression. While a Power Ported Block will bolt on to your engines midsection, the Exhaust Tuner will not be correct, and nor would the carbs. And depending on the year, there is the issue of the Distributor system and the ADI

Gee, I think that is a good deal, if you really want to keep your old IL6. A rebuilder would charge you at least $2K for one, with a core.

Pistons alone are over $100ea for that motor. Boring is $30+ ea, gaskets sets are $100 or so. And it will take several hours to tear her down, take her out to be bored and reassemble.

I have fallen in love with this motor. I was looking to rebuild the one I have and wouldn't mind throwing this on to still at least have s working motor while I figure out the rebuild process. Plus, he lives close to me so I could make him cash offer of $800-$900 and see if he will bite. What's the most you guys would dish out for this? I think $1000 should be my limit. also, just making sure but you guys do agree this word work for me?

Considering the cost of a new motor you could hardly go wrong I say.------It should not be hard to determine if this is a " new " assembly.

That I agree!!! If it really is "new" then ld say this is quite the find!!! Racerone what should I look for to determine if it is new never used? Make him open it up? Also, just as a reference what is the max you would dish out for this if new?
