First post here. Let me first say that I have already found a wealth of information in the stickys and by searching. I'm very grateful for the content here already. Thanks everyone.

I just bought an old '78 Glastron w/ the '78 115 Johnson. My first boat, motor, and trailer. One owner, model number indicates 115ETL78 which is the 20" power trim and tilt model for the year. I own the service manual which is a great resource. Following the advise of older posts I changed the gear oil(looked good) and dropped the lower unit. Driveshaft was partially seized. 3 hours and a lot of wedges and patience I was able to get it to separate. This is where my inexperience and confusion sets in.

Right below the splines of the drive shaft was a torn o-ring. I thought maybe thats why it seized. Maybe the o-ring allowed the grease to leak out or something. So I cleaned up the splines and started on the water pump. I got a water pump kit from Sierra that is labeled for my engine along with other years and hps. The kit includes numerous gaskets including at least one gasket that looks like its for the shift rod housing. Comparing the housing of the new pump to the old pump and the water pump components illustrated in my manual versus what came in my kit I notice some differences. Obviously going from a liner style to the cup style. Newer style also has an oring that goes between housing and cup. Old housing has an impeller housing seal that is not included in new kit and wouldnt fit if it did. Looks like a metal washer with rubber around it. I just assume these are updated and hopefully improved designs.

So using my manual and some videos off of youtube I went about the job. My manual does not show any o-rings being used except the large skinny housing gasket(impeller housing plate seal). Also the blownup diagrams do not explicitly show an o-ring under the splines of the driveshaft. Manual uses the same diagram as this URL.

In the same photo there is an o-ring above the water pump housing. I dont know where exactly that oring is supposed to go. On top of the housing cover grommet? On top of the wear plate but under the impeller which i see videos of people doing. (my manual doesnt mention it and the driveshaft doesnt appear to accommodate the oring in that position although the impeller does.) Or under the splines of the driveshaft. The o-ring in question is #73 in the diagram.

There is another oring in the kit that im not sure where it goes either. Im going to assume its either for the shiftrod housing or maybe below the waterpump housing or for another motor. Any advice or direction would be appreciated. I just want to do the job right. Also while im in there should I replace the shiftrod housing gasket since the kit came with one? Thanks in advance.

#73 should be the o-ring that goes on top of the driveshaft. When you reassemble the motor make sure you lube the driveshaft splines. Put up a pic of the second o-ring

Ok. In most videos I'm seeing guys put an oring between the wear plate and the impeller. My impeller looks to have a groove for one but the manual and diagrams do not show that. It's ok to not use one there?
