I am new to this, I inherited a 115hp six cylinder outboard from a freind
Don't know age/type etc
How do I identify it?
Where would I find a data plate/serial Number?
Looks to me like the air filters are missing.
Should it have them?
If I choke one carb with my hand and crank the starter it fires right up, but will not otherwise.
Does it/should it, have a choke of any kind?
What is the correct starting procedure?
Tach has no signal pulse coming to it,
Where should that pickup from?

Re: 115hp six mercury airfilter question

Don't know your level of knowledge, so I'll start from "Entry level"
To ID the year, there is a plate on the transom bracket with a no of about 7 or 8 characters.
You can cross ref with this.
http://www.marineparts.com/partspages/techhelp/TECH15.HTM
No air filters on these...
The choke is usually a soloniod above all the carbs (electric) and is activated by either pushing the key in or a black button on the older models. There is an alternative to a choke on some models called an enricher. These motors with the electric choke NEED to have the butterflies closed completely to start cold properly.
Depending on the year, the start is.
Put in Neutral.Put muffs on for water circulation.
Connect fuel, prime bulb till hard, activate fast idle lever (sep lever on earlier mods)push to vertical. Turn key to on and either press black button (choke) you will hear a click..or push key in.. then proceed to start. When it fires, release choke button and ease fast idle back as it smoothens out idle. If choke not working, test solonoid. Don't exceed 1200 rpm on muffs.
Tach normally hooks up to remote box, but other more informed iboaters can jump in here :D

BTW When it fires make sure water is running and wait @1-2 min and check tell tale (stream of water running out of cowling base). If no water, after a few minutes, turn it off as the pump may be shot.

Thanks unicorn for your prompt reply
I am proficiant with helicopters and race cars but this is my first boat revival project.

Found blk/yellow wire brocken at the key switch
Repaired it and the choke solenoid is working
Followed your starting procedure, worked great!
I have excess fuel draining back out of the lower carb at idle/low rpm, don't know what happens at high rpm as I am still in the driveway.
Do you have a set up procedure for jets/linkages/stops/cables,etc.

Celt

Good to see that I was able to help a bit. I have only started to learn about OB's 6 mths ago, and thanx to Iboats and it's members and my manual..
You must have one... I have picked up quite a bit of good info.If you search the boards and also http://www.outboardrepairs.com or try to get in touch with people like 12footer, Sharkcat or alcan.
(Plus many more iboats legends) they are very knowledgable, particularly on Mercs.
Sounds to me like float level stuck..
If you know Helicopters.. OB's should be a breeze.

I would recommend that you fix the carb problem before you go boating. My engine had the same problem and I decided to go for a ride anyway. The engine ate a piston in about 15 minutes. It has been my only boat ride all summer.

Good luck.

Re: 115hp six mercury airfilter question

These motors are very reliable, and have lots of low end “grunt”
If you take car of it, you will give it to your grandkids.

But…

There is a few things you should know about them to keep them running.

1. they hate bad fuel. Use FRESH premium BRAND NAME fuel only. If you don’t your motor will suffer from mechanical failure…fast. Believe me I know from experience.

2. Keep the fuel pump in top shape, this will keep the pistons from staving for fuel and burning the top of the pistons. It only takes a few seconds for it to happen, but you can prevent it for about 10 bucks and 10 minutes work.

3. Consider “jetting” the top Carburetor. The top piston is a little bit vulnerable to running lean. If you jet it (parts are cheap and available at your Merc dealer)

4. Change your plugs annually. Preferably at the beginning of the year. It’s just one of those things.

5. Run a small amount of “ marine two stroke decarbonizer “ in the tank every once in a while, just to keep the inside of the motor happy. NEVER USE AUTOMOTIVE CLEANERS OF ANY TYPE.

6. If you are premixing your gas/oil mix, do not add extra oil “for good measure”, it will gum up the motor. 50-1 mix is good for most applications, 45-1 is as “oily” as you want to get it

Also just bear in mind these motors tend to be a little Thirsty, but not much more than other Outboards of similar years/power.

If you do a little research you’ll find these motor where called “the tower of power” and for good reason.

Hope this helps

Oh and by the way.

Fuel drippping after priming, but before starting is normal, (but just a little)

Fuel dripping after start is bad, and dangerous.
