Hey all I just got an offer I don't think I can refuse.... to start let me explain my current setup, I'm running a 1984 75 hp Chrysler on the back of my 2001 Aries pro 200 19ft bass boat (I know it's wayyyyy underpowered) I've worked really hard getting it in good running condition and learnd a lot about outboards along the way, I've been offered to trade my motor for a 1983 Mercury tower of power 115, If I help the guy rebuild the transom on his boat, the 115 would be perfect for my boat the Mortor is in allmost mint condition. All Matanence records for the last 30 some years, great compression, i know theses motors aren't known for there reliability but then again neather is my Chrysler. What I wanna know is, anything specific I should look for on the 115? I think this motor has a seprate trim pump, can I just move that to my boat? Will it need to be mounted in a certain area? How long are the hoses? Will it be difficult? Tilt and trim on my old motor was just mounted to the transom bracket..... here is the sn# off the 115: 5675184 can you confirm it's an 82-83 model? Thanks!!!

That Serial number shows it as an 1981 model. Last year for the crank rated inline 6s

Power trim pump unit should be on a bracket/stand that can be mounted to the floor, the transom, or any solid part of the boat. I think the hoses are about 4 or 5 ft.

I wouldn't say the inlines were unreliable, I had mine for 14 yrs and it only needed a bit of work with link and sync during the warrantee period, and one switchbox 2 years later. Could rope start it cold and it usually caught on the second pull. Still had the original plugs when I traded it in

Check the wiring harness to make sure it's all in good shape, that's the only negative side to these motors rotten wiring and maybe where people got the idea they weren't reliable. The 81 is also an ADI motor so that's a good thing, no distributor. The trim pump and lines go with the motor and yes you'll have to transfer them into your boat and wire up the pump, be sure to add a fuse.

I think the 115 became the 90hp when they changed from crank HP rating to prop rating. The inline 6's do make good power. Mine was an 84 90hp, the only negative thing I could say about it is that it didn't run thermostats and because of that tended to run a bit cold blooded at idle even after being run for a while. Otherwise easy to work on and fuel mileage was decent. I could cruise and tube for an afternoon on two 5 gallon tanks and have half a tank left over at the end of the day.

Not exactly, the 90 whether crank rated or prop rated, had a WOT range of 4500 -5000. The 115, again whether crank or prop rated, was 5000 - 5500. The 140 was 5300 - 5800. If they had done a decal change the prop rated 90 would have been 5000 - 5500 and the prop rated 115 would be 5300 - 5800. There were some differences, but the prop rated 90 still had fewer reeds than a crank rated 115. Slight differences in porting we're probably the differences.
