I have done a search on this and other sites on how to wire a 12/24 trolling motor. I think I pieced it all together but I would like confirmation.

My current unit is a straight 12V (two wires only) and so is the wiring harness (two wires only). The unit I am replacing it with has three wires coming from the trolling motor leads.

A. In order to connect this 12/24 properly, I need a third wire from the batteries (which will be connected in series) preferably 6 gauge to the trolling motor. Correct?

B. Since its a 12/24 trolling motor does that mean I can hook it up only as a 12V? This would mean I don't have to change anything on my current set up but would I still get the thrust its rated for, 50 lbs or I would expect proportionally less?

FYI both units are older model Motorguide units. Four-28 lb thrust and 750 Brute 50 lb thrust.

You are correct. You would need a third wire which would be a positive wire.

Is the Brute 50 a 3-blade plug or does it have a 4-blade?

I don't think you will get the full 50lbs of thrust off of 12v,Hence,the 24v switch.

Tom

Stratos

Thanks for the input.

The 50 lb motor actually has no plug at the moment (there are three wires) that is why I was wondering if I could wire it to my existing harness with my existing plug which is two wires.

Switch? I did not see a switch. Should I be able to switch to 24 from 12 and vice versa? Where would the switch be located.

If the brute 50 is a 12/24 there should be a switch on it, usually on the head where the handle is attached. If it has a foot pedal it is usually there. It will be marked 12v one way and 24v the other.

If there is no switch it is probably a straight 24v if it has three wires.(Not certain though.Haven't ever used a single voltage trolling motor)But I would really look at it closely. The voltage should be marked on it on the powerhead or there may be a small plate on the motor itself to identify it.
What color are the three wires?

Stratos,

Your right th 12/24 switch was on the foot pedal where I was use to seeing my momentary on/bypass toggle switch.

By the way, now that I have rewired the boat with 6 gauge wiring where do I find a plug and receptacle that accepts 6 gauge? Or at least a receptacle. The trolling motor has what appears to be 10 or 8 gauge wires (red, orange and black) So far all I can find locally is ones that accept up to 8 gauge wire. I did a search on the net and still did not find one for 6 gauge. Since 6 gauge is recommended,, they must be available. It's not a dealer item exclusivey, I hope.
