12 pole or 20 pole tachometer for my motor?

Hey guys,<br />Last week my tachometer melted down and I want to replace it. The old tach wasn't working and finally shorted out. Motor charging system is ok. Only problem is how many poles do I need? I am running a 1988 evinrude 115 hp. I think I need a 12 pole 6 pulse tach. If any body out there knows please answer back.<br />Thanks<br />jimpittman
