I just aquired a fiberglass 12' V-hull and was curious to what is the biggest motor I could put on this? There was no plate in the boat saying capacity or max engine size, that is why I am curious.

12' i say 9.9 would be good. unless it is a really heavy boat, 15 may be too much.

It depends. Most 12-14 footers are really flat bottoms. If that's the case then 5-15hp.
If it's a real V-hull then:
Realistically- 20-30hp
Workable- 40-50hp
Totally over the top:

How about a 13ft Paradise with a Merc 225?

Late in the above threads he says that it's surprisingly stable up to the low 80's.
Obviously 30-50hp is more realistic for that boat.

If you know the make and year, the manufacturer may provide that info. Alternatively NADA may have it as well.

Unfortunately, there are may types of 12' FG boats, with Max HP ratings of 5HP to 35HP.

I like that 13footer with 225HP. I suppose if the driver gets out of the boat, it flips over backward from the weight of the motor!

That boat is little more than a dinghy. Not over 9.9HP.

Re: 12' V-hull engine questions

I've got a 12' Duranautic aluminum v hull which I've run an older 9.5hp Johnson on for a few years, I switched to a newer 9.9 Johnson and it was slower due to the added weight, but hanging my 15hp on it made it get up a go. With just me in the boat, and my 15hp on, plus another 100lbs or misc weight in fuel, battery and tackle, it still gets up on plane and goes. A buddy of mine, only about 140 lbs, drove it and the boat flies with him in it, but with me in it, its just sufficient power. I did hang an older 25 hp once, with that motor it was pretty out of control, fun, but out of control. I had to sit on the bow to keep it down and steer it with an extension handle. An 18 hp I tried wasn't much different than the 15hp, just a bit quicker up on plane. Once moving the 15 and 18 would fly, far faster than I felt were safe or under control. The 9.9 hp never got it to that point, it would barely get the boat up on plane. (The same 9.9 however cruises my jon boat at over 20 mph). I should note that the 18 and 25 were full manual motors, no electric start and no battery on board, so the motor itself was as light plus the absence of the battery weight. (Maybe not safe, but definitely fun).

Re: 12' V-hull engine questions

The boat is a true v-hull. It is not an open hull either it is solid (plywood and glass). The motor that was taken off the boat was a 35hp johnson. Speaking of the 225 MERC, I do have a friend with a 75hp johnson, but I would like to actually use the boat and not flip it.

ok that is a heavy 12 footer. 30- 35 should do nicely. we give better answers when we have the complete picture.

I'm gonna ask for a picture next time before i give a opinion on hp and boats.

Was gonna say something different then this. You know that boat could take a 50 or better, depends on what you want to do with it.
