I picked up a Merc 120 that was mis advertised as a 140. Due to the diference in Crankshafts, I need a flywheel for the 120 as I can't use the one from my 140.
If I do buy one sight unseen online (say eBay) what do I look for besides measurements? Is there any other flywheels that will work for this motor or is it jsut from the 120HP?

TIA.

I need flywheel help on my Merc 140

I need flywheel help on my Merc 140

So after research here and finding that the 120's have a pulley and no damper, I looked at my Merc again and it has a damper. This leads me to believe that it is in fact a 140. The Flywheel I have from my 1986 140 will not fit, it is too big (bolt pattern). The motor I have is stamped: 14096613 72/90

I was told it was a 1988 motor. The bolt pattern and center of the flywheel should be smaller for this motor. So what will fit? I NEED this part in order to drop in the motor. I am on borrowed tools (hoist) so the sooner the better.

Thanks

Vinny

Re: 120 Flywheel Need advice:

easy...Your "New" replacement 3.0L engine is a 1 piece rear main seal engine whereas your original 2.5/3.0L engine (same engine for sake of this post) is from a 2 piece rear main seal hence the reason your fly wheel wont go on the "1988" engine. Actually, your newer replacement engine is a 1990 engine. Conclusion: you ONLY need ONE item to solve this problem; a 12 3/4" 3.0L 1 piece rear main seal fly wheel which was used in 1990-1997 3.0L marine engines.
