Found a guy selling a 120 HP force he claims is a 96 or 98. He claims it needs a coil pack? I figured if I can get a good price it will make a decent winter project. I cant run it he has it in storage. Its stored up side down, is that a concern?

What would you guys recommend this motor is worth? NADA says 250 but figured I would get your thoughts!

Is this coil pack an easy fix? I have the SELCO force book since I have one force already.

If it has power trim and tilt, it is worth it. If it is indeed a late 90s, it is Mercury ignition. Parts are easily available and bolt-on but you may end up paying more for them than you do for the engine. If you do decide to buy it (Personally, if it didn't show corrosion damage I would buy it for 250, the tilt/trim alone is worth 400.) do not take the owner's word. Test it yourself to see what components are or are not working. If at all possible, lay the engine on its side and do the quick and dirty test for compression: Turn the flywheel by hand with your thumb over the plug holes. If it can blow your thumb off the plug hole it most likely is good

Storing it upside-down is not a concern engine wise BUT: If the tilt motor bearing weeped hydraulic fluid into the motor you would need to disassemble it and clean it before using. In fact, do it anyway.

The guy is asking way more but i figured I would show him the NADA. What would be the max I should pay for this motor? It does how power trim and tilt.

Way to many unknowns on a non running motor, to pay too much.

If all it needs is a "coil pack," then have him buy one and put it on.

Is it a coil?
What about the stator, trigger, rectifier, starter?
Is there sufficient and even compression?

Does the tilt and trim work?

A non running outboard is a bit of a pig in a poke.

You could easily drop $1000 into it to get it running.

And if there is no compression on just one cylinder......

If the motor is not seized, $400 tops.

I know this is prob a silly question but can I tell when I go look at it if the motor is seized?

Yes, you can grab ahold of the flywheel and turn it several revolutions.
If it turns, it is not seized.

Listen for any noises while you turn it. If it rattles or clinks, something is broken inside.
