120 Looper won't start

G'day fellow boaters,
I've recently purchased a 120 Looper and replaced the throttle/shift controls too.

The first run with the new engine was with the old cables and I got her up to 5800 rpm no worries. I've then replaced the cables and now can't get it on the plane and won't go over 3000rmp... just bogs down. The silencer cover was off so I could see the main jets spraying plenty of fuel into the carbys at WOT (the carbys WERE flooding on the previous time out... have fixed that) .

Then as I was making my way into the ramp she died on me... just gave an occasional sputter. Glad I took a paddle and there was no wind!

Anyhow, I've check for spark (OK), compression (140 psi all 4 cylinders), used a spare fuel tank with fresh fuel. Even tried squirting fuel down it's carbys... all with no luck.
All 4 plugs were wet with fuel after cranking for a while.

Any ideas? Maybe the timing/throttle advance is right out from when I replaced the throttle cable?? Any trick to replacing the cable? When I try to start it I get an occasional quick combustion. Sticky timing plate??

Just letting you know the VRO has been removed... premixed now with standard diaphram fuel pump. I've pulled all 4 carbys apart, cleaned and checked them too.

I have a timing light and will make a 7/16 air spark tester and try them on the weekend.

Cheers.

Re: 120 Looper won't start

Sorry but the ID plate was missing so I'm not sure.

I think it's a very early model looper. Maybe 1985. Definately a Johnson.

I removed the electric primer solinoid this afternoon and found heaps of junk in it's filter! Which direction should it's red lever be? Up or down?

It's doing my head in... I have good even compression, spark and there is fuel going into the carbys.

Red lever should be pararell with the primer body for normal run. Spark should jump a 7/16 " open air gap on a spark tester.

Looks like I've sorted it.

I checked what cylinder corresponded with cylinder number one on the flywheel. Ended up being cylinder number four!! So then the factory standard cylinder number one is repesented by cylinder number two on the flywheel??? So the ignition is one in front on the firing order.

Anyhow, I looked up the wiring diagram going to the coils and matched them up... fixed! Started straight away and idled beautifully :)

Just wondering how this is so? I thought there was only one key positon on the top of the crank where the flywheel fits.
