my mercruiser 120 stays stable at 215-225 sometime going to even 350 for a couple seconds before going back down to 215... even 215 seems hot to me.. do i have a bad gauge? or something in the line? or bad impeller?

You definitely have something going on there, should run between 160 and 180.
I'd start by checking the thermostat (make sure it is opening) then if that checks out ok check the impeller.
When running on muffs is there water coming out the exhaust?

under the therm housing, but do yourself a favor and go to the adults section and download the manual for your engine.

Having trouble downloading, anyone have a cooling system diagram of the 84 mercruiser 120?
