i have a 1969 120hp gm inline 4cyl mercruiser with a 2gc rochester and it has an automatic choke and when i have it set where it is sposto it won't run good around 1000 to 2000 rpms put when i run it richer it will run better but i can't start it unless i take the spark arrester off of it and hold the choke wide open with my finger and have someone turn the key i was wondering if there was something broke on the choke where it sposto hold it open when i start it or anything

With the electric choke on the carb it is usually necessary to push the throttle to wide open once to set the choke, return to neutral idle position and then start the motor.

Re: 120hp mercruiser

hey jurecki im no expert but on my in-line 6 merc i have to push the throttle in and out a couple times to get it started. this allows it to squirt a little extra gas down in there. try it and see what happens. i f it runs better when you change the mixture i say keep it that way.

No you are not supposed to have an electric choke. The 120's had a tube coming from the manifold to the choke coil. If that tube is plugged up or broken, or the cover is gone, you will not get enough heat into the choke coil to for it to work.
