so i have a sugar sand with a 120xr, it started up fine after storage, but when i had the carbs rebuilt and put back on it wont crank over at all. i pulled the plugs and tried to crank it and it turns over fine but shoots an un-godly amount of gas/oil out of the bottom cylinder. rebuilt fuel pump, still does it....anyone have any ideas?!?! i wanna go out on the water!!!

Sounds like maybe you're fuel pump diaphragm is busted.

Batteries good???Do compression test. Then a starter check.Take it apart and check for burnt anything and loose/broken magnets.J

What are the comp readings? Are the connections good. All the grounds right?

Bad comp on 1 cyl can do that. The bad starter will turn it over and when the plugs are out, plugs back in the comp makes it too hard to turn.J

Re: 120xr wont crank unless plugs are pulled

I don't know how much this can help, but I had a 350 chevy that was holding oil in two of the cylinders (the motor was stored on its side, full) and wouldn't turn over, like the motor was sized. the point is the oil was not able to compress like the air therefore locked up the motor until the plugs were removed and the cylinder was drained. Now I do not know your definition of "un-godly amount" but if it is enough the cylinder is filled and won?t allow compression then it might be a problem. Because it is the lower carb there is a possibility fuel is pouring though the lower carb and filling that lower cylinder and removing the plug is doing nothing more than relieving the pressure. If that is a possibility then make sure the float is set properly in that lower carb. I hope you can figure it out. good luck.

thanks for all the replies guys!!! im gonna tear the lower carb apart tomorrow...is there any other way for that cylinder to get fuel/oil other than the carb?? i know there is a crazy fuel recirculation sytem on this thing...how should i go about emptying that bottom cylinder? and could there be somthing wring with the oil injection system causing it to inject too much oil?? sorry about all the questions im new to boat motors

No what is the year and make of the motor? Is it the origional motor for the boat? If you can get the serial number off of the motor it would be very helpful, then we will know exactly which motor you have. It should be on the motor mount right next to the year.

i put a new battery and cleaned all the terminals, cleaned the carbs, still wont turn over...when i try to crank it i can hear a kind of hissing noise like liquid is leaking into something...pulled the plugs and it turns over fine but is still shooting a lot of gas/oil out of only the bottom cylinder, other cylinders its just a mist

Re: 120xr wont crank unless plugs are pulled

Is it possible the starter solenoid is being shorted out when the plugs are in? Is there a short in the plug?

Are the fwd control wires connected properly on the terminal bar?

Do you have a manual?

Make sure you have a good ground to your engine block. Clean all connections and firmly mount.
