I have a 1986 125 hp Force on the boat i'm restoring. I picked up an 89 parts motor. I am planning on switching the lower unit. I removed the water pump to check it out. These are the questions I have for now.

1, Is minor pitting ok on/in the housing?
2, Should I replace the shaft seal? Don't know how long motor has been sitting.
3, Should I replace the impeller? Looks good, but same as above.

I know I will need to replace the oil, but what else should I be looking at before I install it?

Minor pitting of the water pump casting is acceptable---but that depends upon your definition of minor. Minor pitting would be corrosion less than, oh, say, 1/32 inch deep. There should be no corrosion or leakage around the bottom of the casting at the stainless plate and the wall between the intake and outlet side (on the bottom plate, below the stainless plate) should be intact. If you pull off the stainless plate, you are likely to damage the gasket under it, so in that case, replace the gasket too.

Since the engine has no history with you, change the impeller as a matter of course-- it only costs about 20 bucks. Seals normally do not get the same abuse as impellers and they usually don't take a set from sitting. Unless they show signs of leaking or show obvious damage leave them.

Replace the diaphragm and gasket on the fuel pump and remove, disassemble, and clean the carbs. Use the FAQs sticky (synchronizing timing and carbs) at the top of the page to set them.

Re: 125 hp Force questions

Thanks for the info on Frank.

How about the tilt/trim oil? The book I believe states 30 w motor oil. I was told to use dexron atf. Are either of these correct or should I be using something different?
