1998 125 ELPTO

The motor starts and and runs great most of the time. The problem is that, every now and then, it'll start, run for 3 seconds, and die. I might have to restart it once or twice, but most times it starts right up and is ready to go. Every now and then it'll die after it's been running for 10 or so seconds and I put it into gear. If I let it run for 20 seconds or longer, I never have this problem.

Is this a problem with larger 2 strokes or this particular motor, and is it something to even worry about? It doesn't affect my boating, really, but if there is something that should be fixed here, I'm all for trying to fix it. The motor gets upto the recommend RPMs at full throtttle (5200 or so), and there is absolutely no hesitation between getting it into gear and going WOT. Pulls tubes great, and does well with 4 or 5 people in the boat, too.

This is my first experience with a motor over 50 hp. I've only had this boat for 3 or so weeks. Compression checked out before I purchased the boat and the motor is in pristine condition (or so it seems). Just changed the spark plugs last week.

Thanks for the help!

I think it's just a warm up issue. Warm it up well and your problems should be gone.

-W

Warm it up. There is nothing wrong with letting it run at about 1200-1500 rpms for a few minutes while getting ready to go. There is not an engine on this planet that is designed to be started and immediately flogged. You have to let all the moving parts get oiled and heated up, or you just have metal on metal at WOT. Good luck...
