My 89 125 holds just a hair over 1 quart, filling from the top "fill" hole with the vent hole open. It starts running out of vent hole at just over 1 quart with leg verticle.

I know the manual says 26oz but that will not fill it to where it is running out of the vent hole. I am guessing you want it to run out the vent correct?

I fill mine until it starts running out the vent hole with leg in vertical position. A hair over 32oz. Maybe i'm doing it wrong.

fill til it runs out vent, then you are supposed to let it sit for an hour or so to let any air bubbles travel up, then top off. Mine usually takes 2 and 1/2 tubes or so

Yep..
Book says 26, but ignore it...fill till it flows out the vent...ya got a bearing WAY up there..don't starve it..have a 88 125 thats been apart (GC), and at almost 20 years at an annual change ..zero problems..still room for expansion..

Re: 125 lower unit lube

Thanks guys for all your input. I wasn't sure how much to fill, and wasn't sure if I could fill it from the top because the seloc manual says to fill it from the bottom and my drain plug is frozen solid. I was also confused because... well since i had the lower unit off to replace the water pump I opened the vent and fill plugs, turned the LU upside down in bucket for about half an our and only about 6 ounces came out. I now know this was way too little but at least there were no metal filings and no signs of water, so I'm going to just fill it back up and hope for the best. Well thanks again guys, you too scaaty

That lower drain (basically a setscrew) just needed a snug, but they will gets pretty well jammed up. And no way you could fill it from there anyway as its too small
Whatever, DO NOT pull that side Phillips Head screw that holds the shift linkage!!!!

I pulled that screw by accident once... All I can say is that you'll only make that mistake once. It took taking apart the whole lower unit to get it back in right.

Then the next guy does it and...well, then they wonder why we preach GET A MANUAL!
You can try propane heat on the screw and area (Ya have no seals in that area for heat to destroy), .. if the hex aint stripped..but even then, there are hex Ez-Outs..grind down to get a good bite, but go EASY..slow pressure..break it, and its toast).
Mine was junk too, but just drilled it out, re-tapped bigger.
Just grease on the bit to hold the chips on the tap drill (get a Colbalt drill), then grease the tap too.....pretty easy, but I have been a Machinist for a few decades..been there, done that, and its a poor design to begin with..
