Not much a boater here. I few weeks ago I found this lil whaler 1964 and it had a yamaha C40 20inch shaft. 2 weeks after buying it the rod went through the case. 2 questions--could the longer shaft had been the reason for the engine failure?

More importantly, I have a great deal on another yamaha 40 20 inch shaft. Does the extra 50 lbs really make that much different (tilt, trim, battery)? ANd can you recommend a very simple jack plate?

Thank You
Skipper of The Perfect Pint

Re: 13' whaler 1964 need help

Having a longshaft motor on a boat with a shortshaft transom makes the motor work harder, and increases the leverage on the transom, which could weaken it. For best efficiency, you want the cavitation plate (the large horizontal plate above the prop) to be within 1 inch of the very bottom of the boat. Any more and you have too much of the leg in the water, which creates drag and wastes fuel. It is hard to say whether that killed the motor or not, but I doubt it helped it. My advice, either get a shortshaft motor or get the parts to turn you new motor into a shortshaft. There was a guy who built a homemade setback for his boat out of aluminum channel stock, it turned out great. look back a page or two on this forum, you'll find it. Good luck...

Re: 13' whaler 1964 need help

First off, see this wedsite for the Whaler pro's.
http://www.continuouswave.com/

That boat's made to be used with a 15inch shaft motor, the newer 13'whalers use 20inchers, but not the old blues.

I don't see how the shaft being a 20" could have had anything to do with the rod letting go, I wouldent worry about that.

Unless you'r practically steeling the Yammy 20inch shaft, I'd pass it up. For the boat to peforum well with the motor you'd have to use a jack plate, which can be done.....but I wouldent.

Good luck with your whaler! :)

I'm with Ryan here, Skipper.

You need a 15" (short) shaft engine.

On the 13' Boston Whaler anything from 25hp to 40 will do fine. I have had three 13's and found the 70s-80s 25HP JohnnyRudes to be ideally suited for handling and economy. 25-30mph is plenty fast for a 13' boat.

I don't think the boat broke your engine. It was probably incorrect rigging, maintenance and operation. Yammys are very hard to break.

Good luck. :)

So, I really can not run that 20". Would it just not work cause of the weight? Would a jack mount do the trick?

A jack plate will do the trick.

A '67 Sakonnet 16, that's what, Ryan.

Most elegant small boat I ever saw. I agree that the Nauset was a pretty boat, but the Sakonnet was the max. :)
Here's my homemade version, which would not be as good as the one above because I just have hole to lift engine by 1 hole at a time-non adjustable, but it's 6061 (aircraft grade) aluminum channel, also 3/8" thick..... :)

This is not meant to be a comparison but I run a 20" shaft 1975 9.9 on a 13' skiff with no problems. May not be the most efficient but the price is right.

Re: 13' whaler 1964 need help

Well, got a new, never registered yamaha 40 for 2600 bucks. Tough to pass that one up. So, jack plate has been ordered. Thanks for all your help. Not that the whaler wasn't or isn't pretty but the Jack plate takes a bit away from it. Just primed the entire boat today. Half of the wood has been refinished. Thanks again
