that is a horrible, my 14 year old only operates the boat with me in the co pilots seat, and after taking a boater safety course. Times were different back in the 60's when I used my dad's boat at the age of 14. A lot less boats, and I believe more careful people back then.

A shame. I don't know if is just dumb luck, but it seems to be the innocent passengers that get hurt vise the knuckle heads driving. :(

Not to mention lots less powerful boats in those days that can't go as fast generally.

There was an article locally here in MN regarding our large in-town lake know as Minnetonka and the genesis of the need for paid water patrol back when. One of the main reasons cited for the need for the patrol was the availability of high power motors up to 25HP and the deaths caused therein.

From the articles, I get the idea that the 12 year old was just a passenger, perhaps a spotter for the skiier.

The second boat went over the top of the first one, and ran her over.

I'm thinking that age had nothing to do with this accident. But the story isn't fully known yet, so it's possible.

This is something that is my biggest fear on the water. In Ohio were i live, if you were born before like 1982 or something you dont need to take a class and it scares the crap out of me because I see a lot of super high powered boats 4,5,600+ HP with complete idiots behind the wheel, they always seem to never be paying enough attention. What a sad story, almost makes you not want to go on the water, knowing it could happen to anyone.
