130 mercruiser misses beyond 3000 rpm

i have 130 hp mercruiser w/ points ign. engine runs great all day long at 3000 rpm and lower but beyond that it acts like its missing or running out of fuel. can see its getting fuel so i dont think thats the problem . any ideas would be helpful

Couple weeks back my boat was doing the same thing , after 3400RPM it would just cut out like it was running out of gas . It ended up being the Coil , now the boat starts faster and has little more snap to it . Good luck ... check your points out to I change mine every year .

thanks crazy my mechanic is going to be putting new points in it and doing the rest of the tune up wednesday . i was told the coil could be bad so i found a coil that was supposed to be new at my shop and put it on it ran great went right up to 4200 rpm and held .had to slow down to go thru no wake zone for a few, when i tried to come up on plane it started doing it again can something be making my coil lose volts? can the coils be tested?

check your wieghts in your distributor must move freely to advance your timing

Check for fuel restriction and fuel pressure. for ignition issues I would replace the pints and coil with the pretronix system. Get rid of the points. It will run smoother and crank better. You might not notice performance imporvement but well worth the benifits.

thanks ski and blues ,fuel isnt the problem how much is the pretronix system sounds like something i would be interested in. i will check the weights tomorrow never heard of that anyway thanks all and ill let ya know what happens c ya
