It is 36 with a line in the center and 0 with a line on the side to indicate exactly where the 36 degree and 0 degree position is on the flywheel.
You time the engine at full throttle either static or on the water in gear. there is a pointer bolted above the top carb. the flywheel 36 needs to be to the left of the pointer line. 4 small lines left if they are scribed in the pointer plate or approximately one gear tooth to the left. This will give a timing advance of 32 degrees. You can reduce timing to 30 degrees for more safety.
To static time the engine, you remove all four plugs and ground them so the ignition module is not damaged. Jump the solenoid with the key in the on position and check timing with the light as usual.
