I took my recently acquired 135 to the lake today and when it started up the rpms went way up. The tach was not working right so I'm not sure exactly how high but I would guess close to 5000. I would shut it down fast every time. Any idea what could be causing this?

Check the throttle linkage on the motor to make sure something has not fallen off or broken.

I checked all the linkages before I left the lake today and everything was hooked up normal

Is this an old 135 crossflow V4 or a 135 Ficht V6 you are working on. Need a model #, please.

Make sure the spark advance rod/arm still connects the spark advance lever to the timer base. If the ball joint (in the end of the timer base) comes loose, it's possible that the timer base has advanced all the way to max timing.

Where is the spark advance rod located on the motor?

Check out the factory exploded parts diagrams for your specific model number at this website: epc.brp.com

It's just below the flywheel on the stbd side.
