I've been looking at an early 135 Johnson on Craigslist. I don't know the exact year. As near as I can tell they were only made from 1973 thru 1976. Could any of those years have been early enough to have had electric shift?:scared:

If you're asking about the Hydro Electric Shift... that existed from 1968 thru 1972.

The straight Electric Shift existed from 1962 to about 1969 or so.

Joe, it sounds like I may have missed any electric shift issue by a year or so. Boobie, I will get a model# as soon as I can but the guy is really, really hard to contact for some reason. You'd think it'd be easier since he's tryin to sell something?????????????????

Strongly advise you walk away from that engine unless it's a freebie. Once you part with your money, then you find something is not as the seller said it was.... you'll never find him again! And even if you do, you'll never get more than 3 cents worth of satisfaction.

just wondering why you might say that, Joe. Compression is claimed as all around 100.. I would certainly check that before buying. If that is all good I am willing to buy it and get it going as long as it is not electric or electric/ hydraulic shift. Anything else I should be wary of?

Take Joe's advice, but it's your dollar.

My friend, in my 30 years+ experience I've encountered that scenario quite a few times, not personally but with my customers. A customer buys a engine and soon he needs my services. The seller is very difficult to locate, but the customer finally managed to buy the engine anyway, then shortly thereafter expensive problems popped up and the seller made it a point to be as difficult to contact as possible... and would offer no help when finally contacted.

Perhaps he's on the up and up and just busy which is a different case, but of course you'll need to be the judge of that. I can only wish you luck.

Keep in mind that you're speaking of an engine that's 40 years old. What is his lowest selling price?

Re: 135 Johnson...electric shift???

Those early V4 135 engines had very high compression heads, stock from the factory. A 135 in like new condition would have close to 135 lbs compression-normally. 100 lbs indicates it is well worn (down on hp) and probably in need of an overhaul.
