I have a 13'-6" Boston Whaler with a 1986 Merc 35.....I'm thinking of re-powering to a 50hp.....A lot depends on the build of the boat, what you want to use it for, etc.

What is the max rating on your boat.....get close to that.

willjb, Is your boat fiberglass, aluminum, wood, sheetrock, ???? I have a 12' aluminum with a 10hp max rating.

KeltonKrew is right, if you have a capacity plate on it, get the max or as close to it as you can. If you don't have a capacity plate, I know some of the other good folks on this site have a web address that has the calculations for helping you figure out the max hp rating. Good Luck.

if it is in fact a deep v hull a 60hp would be close to the max hp rating. if it were me i'd go with a 60hp. :)

yeah, you could probably put what you would think to be an adequate motor on it, but the coast guard and your capacity plate may disagree with you ;)

it also depends on the weight of the boat, the beam, blah blah blah. It's all a matter of what the hull was designed for
