140 fuel pump orientation

I recently tore down my '81 140 top to bottom to reseal it and upgrade the head. But now that it's reassembly time I've had an epiphany. I remember having the fuel pump installed with the filter cap facing up. But it seems to me every other iteration of this style of pump on other chevy engines would have the filter cap facing down. I'm sure there is a right way and a wrong way; and my seloc manual is no help. What can y'all tell me?

Re: 140 fuel pump orientation

The 140 fuel pump has the filter bowl on the top up. (Doesn't make much sense as fuel spills all over the place swapping the filter...)

The newer 3.0's use a different fuel pump and the filter bowl is on the bottom.

Ok, well like I said that's how I remembered it being installed. Even tho it defies every sensibility I have... Thanks for the input.
