Problem with starting 1985 Mercruiser. Often when turning the ignition key, the only response is a clicking sound, similar to low or dead battery. However battery is fully charged. This may occur when engine is hot or cold. Sometimes the engine starts right up with the first effort. With patience and several tries the engine has always started.
Mechanic was baffled. He changed out the ignition switch but problem remains.
Any thoughts please.

Can a backyard mechanic with modest skills change out the starter? Any hints that might be useful?

if you have a gm type starter, you can also check the solenoid on top of the starter. the front comes off and you will see a copper washer that contacts the large posts. sometimes the washer and post corrode and wear away. the washer can be cleaned up and the post rotated 180 degrees. the starter is usually held on by two bolts at the back and one on the side of the block. remove the two back ones first letting the side one support the starter. starters are not cheap. you might want to find a reworking shop.
