I started the engine for the first time this season. It started ok but doesn't hold idle speed. In order to keep it running I need to constantly play with throttle handle.
If I don't, then it stalls. Right before it stalls a smoke cloud comes from under the flame arrestor with a "sneezing" sound.

The manofold and riser were replaced before starting attempt. Any suggestions please ???

Lennnnny,

Sounds like it's running lean. Check for vacuum leaks, in particular, around the carb. base gasket and the intake manifold gasket.

With the flame arrester off look at the choke valve (buterfly valve) to see that it is mostly closed. And opens as it warms up. Sound like the choke is stuck.

WOW! that was fast, faster then 911 :)
Thank you guys. I also forgot to mention something. There is a threded opening in the new manifold I installed. It is on the same side of the manifold where the bolts hold the manifold to head. I checked the old manifold and noticed that there was no threaded hole on the old one, it is just solid welding spot there. Is it possible to have this problem because of this? As the engine stalls I see a little bit of smoke comming out of that hole. Maybe it should be closed? I have no idea what it is for.

Lennnny,

Intake or exhaust side? If it's intake, that's your vacuum leak.

Thanks for putting me on the right track. I let it run today by constantly giving it more gas. I was able to identify that it had a leak from under the carb. By whatever reason the gasket between carb and manifold was not enough to get a tight connection. I used gasket glue to make a better seal between carb and manifold. Also closed that openning I mentioned earlier. I will try to run it again tomorrow.

Thanks,
Lenny
