ok i got an electric oil pump that was only 20.oo it worked like a champ. i pumped the oil/water out. changed the oil dumped out the filter. ran it for awhile checked the oil. it looked clear, so i took it out for a spin it ran fine and when i got back the oil still looked fine so i think it was the main seal, keeps oil in/ but wont keep water out must be ture. thanks for all the info guys! It was a great deal of help to me!!!! now im ready to fish!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only problem is that as the water can get in it will rust the sealing surface on the cranshaft and you may develop a leak. The damage is already done I would just keep an eye on it and hopefully everything will be alright.

hello
well now to the second and costly problem you have.
if the water was high enough to enter the oil pan then it was high enough to enter the drive bellows . if it sits in the bellows it will destroy the gimbal brg,u-joints and worst, the seal on the input yoke. when the yoke surface rusts the seal leaks, when the seal leaks your drive oil will run into your drive bellows.
guess what now?
now the upper case hase no oil.
now we can watch the merc upper case imitate a hand grenade. I have seen the gears so melted that if you did not know it was a gear you would not guess.
so spend some coins
have a professional look the boat over.
I will never understand pilots and engineers. they absolutly refuse to fix anything until in just grenades:) :) :) .

Dude,
Salt, Freash, It Doesn't Matter.............
Rodbolt is Very Right.........
You've aparently Fixed your Motor.......
That Doesn't mean your Done......
There's No Doubt, Your Gimbel Assembley has been Corrupted.......
As Rodbolt states..... Pull the Drive, Pay Alittle Now....
Or, Alot Later..........

ok,ok im convinced. so can i do this my-self. what would be needed a line up tool. I read about the gimbal bearings if they are not completely smoothe they need to be replace and the u-joint needs to be replaced if rusty. and appaently there are several boots that need to be cheked for cracks and leaks. i was a mechinist and a mechanic back in the day, if i pull this stern drive will i be opening a can of worms? im sure i can get my hands on a manual. i hate spending money labor!!!! but i once took apart a manual transmition to a triumph spitefire its still in a box some where so that being a 10, from 1 to 10 how hard is this procedure?
and can i buy a kit with the gaskets and O rings just for pulling the stern drive?

!Also I see what the result of using car parts on a boat engine could be, the only thing I had was the distributor and rotor button, tossed them and put OEM parts back on. Having an outboard was less complicated!

The actual pulling of the outdrive isn't hard. Replacing the boots can be a bit of a chore, but if you are mechanically inclined you should be able to do it. You ought to buy a manual - it will obviously help tremendously. So far as buying the gasket set for the outdrive - just about any marine store you go to would have it - probably even hanging on the shelf.

Here's a great site I have found helpful:
How do I do Merc stuff?

Have fun!
